The National Unity Platform (NUP) has confirmed it is ready to formally nominate presidential candidate Bobi Wine on Tuesday, September 23. The party says it has gathered over 18,000 signatures from 18 districts, meeting the minimum requirements set by the Electoral Commission (EC).
NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya confirmed the figures during a press briefing. He stated that the party is fully prepared for the nomination process and has mobilized strong support across multiple districts in Uganda.
However, Rubongoya expressed concerns over the EC’s handling of NUP’s submissions. He revealed that signatures from 50 out of the 130 districts submitted were rejected, despite the EC accepting those submitted for President Yoweri Museveni.
Rubongoya has formally challenged the EC to provide a detailed explanation for the discrepancy. He stressed that the public deserves transparency on why verified support for NUP was partly dismissed while other candidates faced no such issues.
Observers note that this dispute could increase tensions between opposition parties and the Electoral Commission ahead of the 2026 elections.
NUP’s insistence on proceeding with Bobi Wine’s nomination demonstrates the party’s commitment to fully participate in the electoral process.
The party has emphasized that its push forward is not just about meeting requirements but also about demanding fairness and accountability from the EC.
Rubongoya reaffirmed NUP’s resolve to ensure that all legal and procedural measures are followed during the nomination process.
This development comes as the political environment in Uganda intensifies, with opposition parties closely monitoring how the Electoral Commission treats submissions from various candidates.
The coming days will be critical in determining whether Bobi Wine’s nomination proceeds smoothly and whether the EC addresses NUP’s concerns in a transparent manner.
