Kampala Central MP Hon. Muhammad Nsereko has raised concerns over Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) and its handling of the presidential nomination process, specifically regarding the collection of required signatures by candidates.
Nsereko questioned how candidate Male Mabirizi successfully met the signature requirements while opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, reportedly did not. “How can Mabirizi, who is not widely known, collect all required signatures while Bobi Wine, who enjoys nationwide popularity, fails?” Nsereko asked during a press briefing.
The MP accused the EC of potentially disadvantaging strong opposition candidates while allowing lesser-known candidates to qualify. He called on the commission to provide clear explanations to ensure transparency and maintain public confidence in the electoral process.
Nsereko emphasized that Uganda’s citizens are aware of Bobi Wine’s popularity and that any lack of fairness in the process could undermine the credibility of the elections. He urged the public to hold the EC accountable and ensure that nomination procedures are conducted in a transparent and impartial manner.
The comments have sparked nationwide discussions about the integrity of the EC and the nomination process ahead of the upcoming presidential elections.
