Busiro East MP, Medard Sseggona, has fired back after losing the National Unity Platform (NUP) party flag to Mathias Walukaaga. The outspoken lawyer and veteran legislator insists that Bobi Wine and NUP erred in backing Walukaaga, whom he calls “too weak” to challenge him.
In a bold interview, Sseggona confirmed he will run for re-election as an independent candidate in the 2026 parliamentary race. He argued that his political experience and proven record give him a clear advantage over Walukaaga, and that voters in Busiro East will make the difference at the ballot box.
> “I will be running independently because I didn’t concede defeat. Mathias Walukaaga is too weak to beat me in an election. And what is he going to legislate in Parliament, especially on my behalf and that of hundreds of others? This is really a joke,” Sseggona said.
The MP, who has served multiple terms in Busiro East, questioned Walukaaga’s ability to handle legislative duties, suggesting he should have stayed in his role as Mayor rather than pursuing a parliamentary seat. According to Sseggona, leadership in Parliament requires not just popularity but also experience, knowledge, and political maturity.
Sseggona also revealed that his fallout with NUP leaders was not due to losing the vetting, but because he was deliberately pushed out of the party’s internal process. He maintains the decision was political rather than based on merit.
Despite the rift, Sseggona reaffirmed his support for Bobi Wine’s presidential bid, while making clear he will not back other NUP candidates, highlighting tensions with the party leadership.
The legislator emphasized his legislative achievements, legal expertise, and long service to Busiro East as reasons voters will favor him over Walukaaga.
This sets the stage for a fierce contest in Busiro East, as Sseggona goes head-to-head with Walukaaga, Bobi Wine’s endorsed candidate. Analysts predict the race will test NUP’s dominance in Buganda, where the party has had strong support since 2021.
Sseggona’s independent bid may split the opposition vote, potentially giving the ruling party a chance to reclaim the seat.
As the 2026 elections approach, Busiro East is shaping up as one of Uganda’s most watched political battlegrounds. Pride, power, and political survival are at stake in the showdown between Medard Sseggona and Mathias Walukaaga.
