Hussein Hudu, the NRM flagbearer for Mbale City Northern Division MP, has reportedly raised Shs200 million ($54,000) to cover his nomination fees for the 2026 elections. According to party sources, the funds—gathered from loyalists and donors—highlight Hudu’s growing clout following his August victory, when a tribunal nullified rival Umaru Nangoli’s primary win due to voting irregularities.
The nomination ceremony is set for next Wednesday at Bukonde Secondary School (Bukonde SS) in Northern Division, a venue selected to emphasize Hudu’s focus on education. The school, celebrated for its “Upwards Forever” ethos, recently graduated 700 students through a patriotism initiative and received Shs500 million in government-funded upgrades.
Organizers have promised a memorable event, with top Ugandan artists like Eddy Kenzo and Sheebah Karungi rumored to perform. Kampala’s leading catering firms will provide local delicacies such as matooke, luwombo, and cocktails, transforming the occasion into a festive rally.
Hudu also intends to use the platform to call for better water infrastructure from the Ministry of Water and Environment, tapping into local frustrations over water scarcity. “Our people deserve reliable access—boreholes and pipes are non-negotiable,” a campaign insider said.
Yet the lavish spending—well beyond the typical Shs20 million nomination fee—has drawn criticism, with some accusing the NRM of flaunting its “financial muscle” amid ongoing economic struggles.
As Nangoli weighs running as an independent candidate, the race for the seat is heating up. Hudu’s grand campaign kickoff seeks to galvanize support, combining celebration with policy advocacy. Northern Division voters will be watching closely to see whether the show of wealth wins favor or reinforces concerns about widening inequality.
