The Government of Uganda, with funding from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), has started construction of a permanent Masindi Port Bridge over the River Nile, set to replace the current ferry service and enhance connectivity between the Bunyoro and Lango sub-regions.
Allan Ssempebwa Kyobe, Communication Officer at the Ministry of Works and Transport, said the bridge is designed to last more than a century and will enable smoother movement of goods between neighbouring districts, especially Kiryandongo and Apac.
Spanning over 500 metres, the bridge is expected to provide a stable, permanent crossing, improving trade routes and expanding market access for local communities.
A local trader welcomed the initiative, noting that “safer and more reliable transport of goods opens up wider markets and will likely increase income for traders.”
The Ministry also confirmed that the procurement process for selecting a contractor for the civil works is ongoing, with the project anticipated to significantly boost regional trade once completed.
