Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the Deputy Spokesperson of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and aspirant for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat, appeared before the Nakawa Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning to face charges of inciting supporters to commit acts of violence against security officers.
Mufumbiro, who was arrested last month, has been on remand and will remain in custody even as nominations for the Nakawa East seat begin. He is also facing separate charges related to alleged military-style training and is currently detained at Luzira Prison. Later today, he is expected to appear before the Kawempe Magistrates Court alongside nine other suspects in another case.
At Nakawa, Grade One Magistrate Frank Nahamya read the charge of incitement to violence, to which Mufumbiro pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors claim that on September 4, 2025, while in Kampala, Mufumbiro encouraged NUP supporters to target security officers, an action they say amounts to incitement.
Magistrate Nahamya remanded him until November 6, 2025, to allow police time to complete investigations. Mufumbiro’s lawyers have vowed to seek bail and contest what they describe as politically motivated charges aimed at derailing his parliamentary campaign. Meanwhile, NUP supporters gathered outside court voiced confidence that he will soon regain his freedom and resume his bid for the Nakawa East seat.
