Veteran musician and former Firebase Vice President, Buchaman, has left many Ugandans surprised after revealing that Nubian Li was more popular than Bobi Wine during the early days of their music careers.
In a recent interview, Buchaman spoke about the formation of Firebase Crew in the early 2000s and the rise of the stars within the group. He painted a picture of the early music scene in Uganda, where talents were slowly emerging and battles for recognition were fierce.
According to Buchaman, Nubian Li had already made a name for himself before Bobi Wine even gained fame. He recalled how Bobi Wine used to admire Nubian Li and watch him perform at shows.
“Nubian Li was a music star in the late nineties when we were just starting out. Bobi Wine used to admire him. He would get bookings before us and was paid between UGX 50,000 to 100,000 per show,” Buchaman explained.
This admiration, Buchaman noted, was mutual in the sense that Bobi Wine saw a role model in Nubian Li. It was clear that Nubian Li’s stage presence and skill had set a standard for many young artists at the time.
Despite his early success, Buchaman revealed that Nubian Li’s music career slowed down when he made the decision to return to school. This break allowed other artists, including Bobi Wine, to rise and dominate the music scene.
“He was up there musically but declined after going back to school. By the time he returned, we were already running the city, and I helped bring him back on board,” Buchaman added.
Buchaman’s revelations highlight the competitive nature of Uganda’s music industry in the late nineties and early 2000s. Many artists started with promise, but only a few managed to sustain continuous success.
Fans who grew up listening to Firebase Crew will remember the era when Nubian Li was a major name in performances and shows across Kampala. His contribution to the group’s early success remains an important chapter in Ugandan music history.
The story serves as a reminder that the journey of artists like Bobi Wine involved admiration, learning, and friendly rivalry. Nubian Li’s early stardom paved the way for others and helped shape the sound and energy of Firebase Crew in its formative years.
