The Uganda Police has strongly denied claims that its officers beat National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters during the recent clashes in Mbarara. According to the police, the viral videos circulating online have been misunderstood, and the chaos seen was not caused by police brutality. Instead, they insist the fight was between NRM and NUP supporters themselves.
ASP Gilbert Nyaika, one of the officers who addressed the matter, said people need to stop spreading lies about the incident. He explained that if Ugandans watch the videos carefully, they will clearly see two different groups fighting—one group dressed in yellow and the other in red. These, he said, were rival political supporters confronting each other, not police attacking NUP fans.
Nyaika stated that the police only arrived at the scene to restore calm and stop the two groups from causing serious harm. He emphasized that at no point did officers use force on either side, but instead tried to separate the clashing supporters. According to him, accusations against the police are simply attempts to mislead the public.

He added that Mbarara is a region known for its herdsmen, and it is common to see people carrying sticks as part of their everyday life. Because of this cultural practice, many people mistakenly thought that those holding sticks in the videos were police officers assaulting supporters.
The police spokesperson insisted that these misunderstandings are dangerous because they create unnecessary tension between citizens and the security forces. He urged the public to verify information before sharing it, especially when it involves sensitive political situations.
Nyaika also mentioned that the police had deployed officers to ensure peace during the event, and their major role was to keep both groups apart. He explained that the clashes escalated so quickly that some people assumed the police were involved when, in reality, officers were trying to break up the fights.
He called on political leaders to guide their supporters on peaceful conduct during rallies and campaigns. According to him, violence only damages the reputation of political parties and puts innocent people at risk. He warned that the police will not tolerate disorder, regardless of which party is involved.

The police further urged Ugandans to stop politicizing every incident without proper evidence. They believe such actions fuel anger and can lead to more violence if not controlled. Instead, they encouraged people to focus on peaceful engagement and lawful political activity.
ASP Nyaika emphasized that the police remain committed to protecting all Ugandans, regardless of their political affiliation. He assured the public that officers will continue to act professionally and fairly in all regions of the country.
In conclusion, the Uganda Police asked the public to trust the official reports regarding the Mbarara incident. They insist that what happened was a clash between NRM and NUP supporters—not police brutality as some reports have claimed. Their message was clear: let the truth be known, and let peace prevail.
