President Yoweri Museveni has advised Uganda’s youth to stop spending their time on activities he described as unproductive, such as riots, endless political arguments, and constant debates over European football. He said many young people are losing focus and risking their future by giving time to things that add no value to their lives.
While addressing journalists at the State Lodge in Mbale on Friday, the President noted that today’s youth waste many hours on riots and street chaos instead of finding ways to improve their wellbeing. He explained that taking part in violent demonstrations does not solve any personal or national problem, but only distracts young people from opportunities that could change their lives.

Museveni also criticised the growing culture of spending whole days arguing about politics on radio and social media. He said that most of these political arguments are fueled by misinformation and emotions, and often lead to anger rather than progress. According to him, such discussions do not help young people gain skills or build stable careers.
The President further expressed concern about the amount of time young Ugandans invest in following European football. He said it is not bad to enjoy sports, but making football debates a daily routine and priority is a sign that many youths are drifting away from serious responsibilities.
Museveni encouraged young people to focus their energy and creativity on activities that will help them build a better future. He urged them to learn skills, start income-generating projects, and look for opportunities that will benefit their families and communities.
He also highlighted the importance of unity and cooperation among East African countries. Museveni believes that a strong and united East Africa will create more jobs and stability for young people in the region. He said youths should participate in development, not destruction.
The President reminded the youth that time is a valuable resource that should not be wasted. He explained that habits formed at a young age can shape one’s entire life, and therefore young people must choose wisely how they spend their days.

Museveni said the government is implementing several programs meant to support youth development, but it is up to the young people to take advantage of these opportunities rather than being distracted by riots and political fights.
He encouraged parents, leaders and teachers to guide the youth and help them understand the difference between helpful activities and those that lead to nowhere. According to him, a nation can only develop when its young population is focused and productive.
The President ended his message by urging youth to think long-term, work hard, and stay disciplined. He said Uganda needs young people who are ready to build, innovate and bring positive change—not those who waste their potential on endless arguments and riotous behavior.
