Businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba has shared an emotional story about his mother’s long and painful battle for life, revealing that the family spent more than Shs21 billion in medical treatment across the world. Speaking during the burial of his mother, Hajjat Azida Nanteza, in Bushenyi, he opened up about a journey filled with hope, fear, sacrifice and heartbreak.
According to Basajjabalaba, the family tried everything humanly possible to save their mother. Their journey began in India, where specialists attempted to stabilise her condition. When improvement slowed, they moved to South Africa and later to the United Kingdom, searching for answers and solutions that could restore her health.
Her situation took a worrying turn when she suddenly lost her voice. This unexpected development sent the family into panic. They immediately flew in a specialist from Egypt, hoping that the new expert could offer direction or a breakthrough. Despite the efforts, her health continued to decline, leaving the family desperate for any ray of hope.
By 2025, doctors in Germany delivered devastating news. After conducting several examinations, they discovered that her heart had become extremely weak. To make matters worse, she had developed two masses on her liver. For the family, this was one of the hardest updates to accept after years of fighting.
Still, Basajjabalaba did not give up. He was willing to go to extraordinary lengths for his mother’s survival. He even offered €2 million—about Shs8.3 billion—to secure a heart transplant in Germany. But doctors there turned down the request, explaining that her age made the operation too risky and impossible to approve.
Throughout her treatment, Basajjabalaba and his family remained hopeful. They travelled from one country to another, knocking on doors of top medical institutions, consulting the best experts, and trying every possible treatment that could give their mother a chance to live. Their efforts showed deep love and commitment.
Friends and relatives who attended the burial were moved by the businessman’s emotional testimony. Many had known that the family was investing heavily in her health, but few imagined the extent of sacrifice they had made.
