Minister of Local Government Balaam Barugahara has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s political landscape after revealing that a sweeping crackdown on corruption is on the horizon, with hundreds of government officials expected to face arrest and disciplinary action in the coming weeks.
During a televised appearance on Sanyuka TV, Balaam declared that the government is ready to take firm action against individuals accused of stealing public resources. He warned that the patience of authorities has run out and that those abusing public offices should brace themselves for the consequences.
The minister used the platform to strongly defend the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), describing it as a civic organization dedicated to supporting government efforts to restore accountability, fight corruption, and promote law and order across the country. He said the movement has grown into a significant force for positive change.
Balaam also spoke highly of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, whom he described as a disciplined, humble, and patriotic leader. He praised the Chief of Defence Forces for his commitment to national service and insisted that many Ugandans continue to admire his leadership qualities.
Responding to criticism surrounding Muhoozi’s social media activity, Balaam dismissed allegations that the general personally authors controversial posts shared on X. He challenged critics to provide credible evidence before making such claims, arguing that speculation should not be treated as fact.
His comments arrive amid increasing attention on PLU’s growing influence in national affairs. The organization has become a central topic in political discussions, with supporters viewing it as a vehicle for transformation while critics question its expanding prominence within public discourse.
On accountability, Balaam called on the Inspectorate of Government and other anti-corruption agencies to intensify investigations into public servants suspected of misconduct. He disclosed that more than 400 civil servants are expected to be arrested or interdicted as part of efforts to clean up government institutions.
The minister also defended the Kyankwanzi Ministers’ Retreat against accusations of wasteful spending, insisting that taxpayers’ money was used responsibly. He further dismissed reports of leadership wrangles within PLU and praised President Yoweri Museveni as an exceptionally knowledgeable leader whose experience continues to guide the country’s governance.
