A tragic road accident along the busy Kampala–Masaka Highway has claimed the lives of four people and left another person injured following a deadly head-on collision involving a Mercedes-Benz trailer and a Fuso box-body truck. The accident has caused fresh grief among families of the victims and raised renewed concerns about the increasing number of fatal crashes on Uganda’s major highways.
The fatal crash happened at Matanga, also known as Ndikuttamadda, in Masaka City, one of the areas along the highway where motorists often face challenges due to heavy traffic and risky driving behaviours. The incident occurred during the early hours of Wednesday, July 22, 2026, leaving emergency responders and police officers rushing to the scene.
According to Masaka East and West Regional Police Spokesperson Twaha Kasirye, the accident occurred at around 12:05 a.m. and involved a Mercedes-Benz trailer and a white Fuso box-body truck. Police said the two vehicles collided head-on, causing severe damage and resulting in the immediate death of several occupants.
Police reports indicate that the trailer, registration numbers CGO9638AF/19 and CGO6561AA/19, was travelling from Masaka towards Kampala when the accident happened. The driver allegedly attempted to overtake another vehicle while descending Matanga Hill, a move that reportedly placed the trailer directly in the path of an oncoming vehicle.
The Fuso truck, registration number UBQ 238Q, was travelling from Kampala towards Masaka when it met the trailer during the dangerous overtaking attempt. The two vehicles collided with great force, leaving the occupants with little chance of survival due to the impact.
The trailer driver, identified as Syaunswa Kanyamunyu, died instantly at the scene of the accident. Three other occupants who were travelling in the Fuso truck also lost their lives, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths from the crash to four.

One unidentified passenger survived the horrific collision and was quickly rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for medical treatment. Authorities said the condition of the survivor was being monitored as medical teams worked to provide the necessary care.
Following the crash, police officers from the area responded and documented the scene as part of investigations into what exactly caused the accident. The bodies of the deceased were later taken to the hospital mortuary pending postmortem examinations and identification procedures.
Preliminary investigations by police suggest that careless overtaking by the trailer driver may have played a major role in causing the crash. However, authorities emphasized that investigations are still ongoing and a final report will be issued after all evidence has been examined.
The latest accident has added to growing concerns about road safety in Uganda, where fatal crashes continue to claim hundreds of lives every year. Road users have repeatedly been warned against reckless driving behaviours such as dangerous overtaking, speeding, and ignoring traffic regulations.
The tragedy comes shortly after another devastating road accident along the Kapchorwa–Mbale Highway, where a school bus crash reportedly claimed the lives of several pupils and a school director. The two incidents have increased public calls for stronger measures to protect passengers, especially on busy highways.
Many Ugandans have continued urging authorities to strengthen enforcement of traffic laws, conduct regular vehicle inspections, and ensure drivers receive proper training before operating heavy vehicles on public roads.
Police statistics released earlier show that road accidents remain a serious national challenge. Thousands of crashes are recorded annually, with many resulting in deaths, permanent injuries, and emotional suffering for affected families.

In 2025 alone, thousands of road traffic accidents were reported across the country, with thousands of people losing their lives while many others suffered serious injuries. Authorities have repeatedly stated that most crashes are caused by human errors that can be avoided through responsible driving.
Families of the victims are now left mourning the sudden loss of their loved ones, while communities continue calling for urgent action to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.
Road safety experts have advised motorists to exercise extra caution when driving on highways, especially during night hours when visibility is reduced and the risk of accidents increases.
The Kampala–Masaka Highway remains one of the busiest transport routes in Uganda, carrying thousands of passengers and goods every day. However, frequent accidents along the road have continued to raise concerns about driver behaviour and road discipline.
As investigations continue into the cause of the Matanga crash, authorities are urging drivers and passengers to prioritize safety and avoid actions that put lives at risk.
The families who lost their loved ones are now facing a painful period of mourning, while the country once again remembers the importance of protecting lives on Uganda’s roads. The tragedy serves as another reminder that careful driving and respect for traffic rules can save countless lives.
