Police and transport authorities have stepped up road safety operations along the Kampala–Masaka Highway as part of a wider effort to reduce road crashes and enforce compliance among motorists.
The intensified crackdown is being conducted under Operation Barabara Salaama, with enforcement teams carrying out targeted inspections on buses, taxis, trucks and other commercial vehicles operating along the busy route.
The operation brings together transport regulation officers and the Uganda Police Force, with leadership from Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety Winstone Katushabe and Deputy Director of Traffic and Road Safety ACP Norman Musinga.
Authorities are focusing on identifying traffic violations, checking vehicle roadworthiness and ensuring drivers meet all legal requirements before continuing their journeys. The inspections are aimed at detecting potential risks before they result in accidents, injuries or fatalities.
Officials said commercial passenger vehicles and heavy trucks remain a major area of focus because any failure in maintenance, driver discipline or adherence to safety standards can have serious consequences due to the number of people and loads involved.
The Kampala–Masaka Highway, a major transport link between Kampala and several parts of central and western Uganda, experiences heavy traffic daily, making strict enforcement of road safety measures necessary.
Transport operators have been encouraged to maintain their vehicles, employ qualified drivers and ensure all safety requirements are met before vehicles are allowed on the road. Motorists have also been reminded to carry valid documents and comply with traffic regulations.
Authorities have appealed to all road users to play their part in reducing accidents by avoiding reckless driving, observing speed limits, respecting traffic guidelines and cooperating with enforcement officers.
Through Operation Barabara Salaama, police and transport authorities aim to strengthen road discipline, prevent avoidable crashes and make the Kampala–Masaka Highway safer for motorists, passengers and other road users.
