Questions continue to surround the circumstances that led to the death of Ugandan businessman and industrialist Dr. James Musinguzi Garuga on August 6, 2025, with renewed attention on disagreements within his family.
The late Dr. Garuga’s widow, Peace Kesiime Bagorogoza, has faced criticism over claims she made during his memorial service at All Saints Cathedral in Nakasero, where she attributed his death to poor medical facilities in government hospitals.
However, Alwyn Carl Garuga has disputed the claims, saying his father was never treated in a government hospital and that efforts to secure his medical evacuation abroad were complicated by issues surrounding his passport and UK medical visa.
Alwyn has also questioned why his father’s passport, which reportedly contained a valid UK medical visa, was taken to a Turkish visa-handling office.
He has maintained that the circumstances surrounding the passport and the failure to facilitate his father’s medical evacuation deserve independent investigation.
The family disagreements have also extended to the management of Dr. Garuga’s business interests.
A July 24, 2026 ruling by Assistant Registrar of Companies Daniel Nasasira reportedly removed Agaba Maguru from the registers of Garuga Properties Ltd, INCAFEX Ltd and Kinkiizi Development Company Ltd.
A letter by the Solicitor General to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Lands, has also reportedly raised questions about who has authority to pursue compensation involving Garuga Properties Ltd, noting that the Administrator General had been appointed as the deceased’s personal representative.
Alwyn has further rejected claims that he was not close to his late father or that he failed to attend his funeral in Rugyeyo, Kanungu, pointing to photographs and his history with his father.
He says Dr. Garuga supported his education at the Communication University of China and later employed him at his offices at Impala House.
He has also disputed claims concerning his family, saying he has two children, a daughter, Garuga Arianna, and a son, David Garuga.
As the disagreements continue, calls are growing for the circumstances surrounding Dr. Garuga’s death, his medical treatment and the management of his estate to be addressed through proper investigations and due process rather than competing allegations in the media.
