Youth leaders affiliated with the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) in Greater Mubende have pledged to take the fight against corruption to the grassroots, promising to mobilise communities, promote accountability and closely monitor the use of public resources.
The commitment was made during the election of the PLU Greater Mubende regional leadership at Kakungube Village in Nalutuntu Sub-county, Kassanda District. The new leadership brings together youth representatives from Mityana, Kassanda, Mubende, Kiboga and Kyankwanzi districts.
The newly elected leaders said their grassroots structures would be used to identify concerns surrounding misuse of public resources and encourage residents to demand greater transparency from public officials. They said fighting corruption should not be limited to national-level discussions but should begin within local communities.
Isaac Kitanda, the PLU spokesperson for Greater Mubende, said the new leadership would prioritise youth mobilisation and community participation in efforts to promote accountability. He said young people would be encouraged to understand their role in monitoring government programmes and ensuring public resources benefit their intended beneficiaries.
“Our focus is to take the fight against corruption to the grassroots,” Kitanda said, adding that local leadership structures would be used to help communities understand their responsibility in demanding accountability and participating in government programmes.
The gathering also saw youth leaders commend PLU leaders Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Minister for Local Government Balamu Baruhagale for what they described as efforts to address corruption and strengthen discipline in public service. Kassanda District Chairperson Drek Ssemuyaba Ssembuusi urged residents to support initiatives promoting accountability and responsible leadership.
Ssemuyaba further encouraged residents to observe the directive issued by Minister Balamu regarding the operation of bars, while also urging parents to support their children in acquiring education and practical skills. Kassanda South MP Abdul Bisaso, meanwhile, called on young people to actively participate in PLU programmes and make use of opportunities that can contribute to the development of their communities.
The Greater Mubende PLU youth leadership said its campaign would extend beyond political meetings into villages and communities across the five districts. The leaders pledged to mobilise more young people for community development, strengthen grassroots participation and make accountability a central part of their activities.
