Pastor Wasswa Kiyingi, the senior pastor of Pillar of Fire Church in Wampeewo, has attracted public attention following reports that a young man he prayed for continued experiencing distress after an attempt to cast out alleged demons. The incident has sparked debate among Ugandans, particularly coming shortly after political analyst Frank Gashumba challenged pastors to demonstrate the miracles they claim to perform, reportedly attaching a Shs300 million offer to the challenge. The developing discussion has raised questions about faith, spiritual healing and the need to examine claims of miraculous intervention carefully.
According to an account circulating online, the young man was taken to Pastor Kiyingi for prayers after experiencing troubling situations that those around him reportedly interpreted as demonic possession. The pastor is said to have conducted a deliverance session, praying for the man and commanding the alleged demons to leave his body. His family reportedly hoped that the prayer session would bring an end to the man’s suffering and allow him to return to a more peaceful life.
During the reported prayer session, Pastor Kiyingi allegedly told the young man that the Holy Spirit had revealed that he had been bewitched and that demons had been forced into his body. The pastor reportedly expressed confidence that Jesus Christ would deliver him from the situation within seconds. These statements have attracted attention because of the strong assurances associated with the prayer session and the expectations they may have created for the young man and his family.
A video said to show the encounter has also drawn attention, with reports indicating that the pastor intensified his prayers while touching the young man’s stomach and commanding the alleged demons to leave. The account further claims that anointing oil was applied during the session as part of the deliverance process. However, the full circumstances surrounding the encounter remain unclear, and the claims about what happened during the prayer session have not been independently verified.
Questions reportedly emerged after claims that the young man was still experiencing distress by the following day. According to the circulating account, his wife and children became concerned because they had hoped the prayers would bring him relief. The reports have fuelled online discussions about the expectations surrounding deliverance sessions and how religious leaders and families respond when someone continues experiencing difficulties after prayer. However, the available information does not independently establish the young man’s condition or the cause of his distress.
The account also claims that the man continued experiencing frightening nighttime episodes involving black cats, which he reportedly described as disturbing and difficult to understand. These experiences have been linked to the claims of alleged demonic activity, although there is no independently verified evidence establishing that connection. Experiences that cause fear or interfere with sleep can have different explanations, and the man’s account alone cannot establish that witchcraft or supernatural forces were responsible.
The incident has attracted even greater interest because of Frank Gashumba’s reported challenge to pastors who claim to perform miracles. Gashumba has called for religious leaders to demonstrate their healing claims in ways that can be observed and assessed, with the reported Shs300 million offer adding another dimension to the debate. The challenge has reignited discussions about whether claims of miraculous healing should be supported by independently verifiable evidence and how religious leaders can respond to public questions without dismissing the importance of faith to their followers.
As the story continues to circulate, it remains unclear whether Pastor Kiyingi has issued an official response to the reports or whether additional information about the young man’s condition has emerged. The allegations surrounding the prayer session should therefore be treated cautiously until more reliable details become available. The incident has nevertheless brought renewed attention to the relationship between religious belief, claims of spiritual healing and public accountability, while leaving Ugandans waiting for further clarification about what actually happened during the reported deliverance session.
