A reliable source inside the National Unity Platform Election Management Committee has confessed to this publication that the prevailing confusion in Makindye West was sowed by the party Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya.
“At the start of the process former NUP head of institutions Musiri David was in a comfortable lead with 65% of the results followed by the incumbent Allan Ssewanyana with 35% ,” a source inside the NUP database says. “Go and have a look at the preliminary leaked list. Musiri was the duly nominated flag bearer for Makindye West. He was going to be declared but Rubongoya rang Mr. Ssebuwuufu and ordered that Zahra takes the slot,” the source adds.
Our source furthermore intimates that Zahra Maala Luyirika had paid close to UGX 600 million to take the Kampala woman MP flag but the ground resistance from the Shamim Malende camp rendered every attempt unsuccessful.
“Zahra gave Rubongoya some money and pledged to support him in Kampala central if she gets the woman MP flag. But this had to be reassessed because Malende staged a very serious resistance and she seemed more grounded than Zahra,” the source says. “What had to be done was to sacrifice Musiri David especially that Mulyanyama had switched goal posts to Makindye East where Nyeko Derrick had declared an exit. Zahra had to be compensated for the money she spent but in reality Musiri was the strongest candidate in Makindye West,” the source adds.
The arena is now left to the public court to judge if Musiri David can remain their favorite in case he chooses to take the independent path which their own party President Kyagulanyi Ssentamu took in 2017 during the Kyadondo East byelection when FDC and DP denied him their endorsements and cards.
