President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially been declared a nominated candidate for Uganda’s 2026 presidential elections. The Electoral Commission confirmed that he met all requirements under the Presidential Elections Act.
Justice Simon Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, made the announcement in Kampala, formally clearing Museveni to contest for another term in office.
Following the nomination, Museveni’s campaign team was instructed to submit a schedule of campaign meetings and media appearances. This aims to harmonize the activities of all presidential candidates and prevent scheduling conflicts.
In accordance with the law, Museveni’s team also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Electoral Commission, committing to follow official campaign timelines and guidelines. Additionally, the national voters’ register was handed over in soft copy to Museveni’s official agent, providing access to voter information ahead of the election campaigns.
The nomination marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s electoral process, as Museveni joins the list of candidates cleared to contest the presidency. Observers note that his official nomination underscores his long-standing presence in Ugandan politics and sets the stage for an intense campaign period.
The Electoral Commission emphasized that all candidates, including Museveni, must adhere to the legal framework and campaign guidelines to ensure a fair and peaceful election.
As political parties and independent candidates gear up for the 2026 elections, Museveni’s nomination officially kicks off his campaign journey, a key moment in Uganda’s democratic calendar.
