Uganda has launched the Boda Boda Digital Empowerment Project, a bold initiative aimed at equipping riders with essential digital skills. The program was unveiled yesterday at the Kyadondo Rugby Grounds by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) through its development arm, UCUSAF, signaling a new era for the country’s transport sector.
The project is designed to give Boda Boda riders the tools to navigate the digital world as confidently as they navigate the roads. By mastering digital technology, riders can enhance their livelihoods and take part in Uganda’s growing digital economy.
UCC Director James Beronda explained that the goal is to make Boda Boda riders proficient in information and communication technology (ICT), enabling them to confidently engage with online platforms and digital services. The program transforms riders from traditional transport providers into digitally skilled professionals.
The initiative is backed by partnerships with Impact Outsourcing and Simba Automotives, reflecting Uganda’s commitment to inclusion, skill development, and economic growth. These collaborations aim to ensure that the Boda Boda sector benefits from digital tools and opportunities.
As one of Uganda’s largest informal industries, the Boda Boda sector employs thousands and serves millions daily. By introducing digital skills, the program ensures riders are prepared for the country’s push toward a fully connected society.
Participants will learn to use digital tools for communication, safety, and financial management. This training is expected to boost efficiency, increase income, and support overall professional development.
Beyond individual benefits, the project strengthens Uganda’s broader digital ecosystem. Expanding digital literacy across communities ensures more citizens can participate in and benefit from technological advancement.
The Boda Boda Digital Empowerment Project also serves as a model for other informal sectors, demonstrating how technology can improve skills, productivity, and access to opportunities.
In embracing this initiative, Uganda ensures that no group is left behind in the digital revolution. By empowering Boda Boda riders with technology, the country is equipping a vital workforce to thrive in both traditional and digital spaces.
The launch marks a milestone in Uganda’s digital transformation, showing that the nation is ready to embrace innovation while building skills and opportunities, one rider at a time.
