The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has unveiled a new collaboration with Interswitch, one of Africa’s leading digital payments and e-commerce companies, in a strategic move to widen access to social security services across Uganda. The partnership—announced during the #NSSFKukyalo outreach at Workers’ House in Kampala—seeks to enroll at least 100,000 new savers onto the SmartLife Flexi platform using Interswitch’s extensive Quickteller agent network.
NSSF Managing Director Patrick Ayota described the partnership as a major milestone toward achieving the Fund’s ambition of reaching half of Uganda’s working population by 2035—a target that represents more than 15 million people.
“Our vision is to ensure that every eligible Ugandan can participate in social security. Working with Interswitch strengthens our ability to build both the capacity and motivation for individuals to save,” Ayota noted.
NSSF continues to record strong performance on its mandatory savings portfolio, with assets under management now exceeding UGX 26 trillion. This growth is fueled by sustained member contributions and sound investment strategies. At the same time, voluntary savings are gaining momentum through SmartLife Flexi—NSSF’s goal-oriented product launched less than a year ago. The initiative has already accumulated UGX 52 billion, attracted 49,000 savers, and facilitated over 250,000 transactions.
Ayota also revealed that in just three months, the Fund has disbursed UGX 3 billion in benefits to members seeking quick access, reinforcing NSSF’s commitment to fast, transparent, and member-friendly processes.
“We want Ugandans to trust that their money is safe—and accessible when they need it,” he emphasized.
The new partnership targets Ugandans who operate in the informal sector, many of whom have limited access to traditional banking systems. Through Quickteller’s vast agent network, individuals can now register for SmartLife Flexi and make deposits at any time.
“This collaboration brings NSSF’s services closer than ever before. Whether you are in a trading center, village shop, or urban neighborhood, you can now save conveniently,” Ayota said.
While earlier partnerships with telecom companies and banks expanded digital and mobile options, NSSF acknowledges that a significant portion of the population still prefers in-person interactions. Quickteller agents—found in everyday locations like kiosks, shops, and local markets—fill this gap by offering accessible, face-to-face service channels.
According to Moris Seguya, Interswitch Uganda’s Country General Manager, the Quickteller platform boasts more than 20,000 agents nationwide, making it one of the most expansive payment networks in the country.
“By integrating NSSF services into Quickteller, we are embedding social security at the grassroots. Saving for the future becomes as simple as making a daily deposit of UGX 5,000,” Seguya explained.
He added that SmartLife Flexi is set to redefine how Ugandans approach saving—offering flexibility, safety, and ease of use. Employers can also take advantage of the network to remit mandatory contributions, minimizing administrative burdens for businesses.
This partnership marks a significant advancement in Uganda’s financial inclusion agenda, ensuring that both urban and rural communities have equal access to social security services. With SmartLife Flexi now available at the nearest Quickteller agent, saving for retirement or personal goals has never been more convenient or more within reach.
