Uganda is set to host the inaugural Africa Dragon Boat Cup from October 1st to 4th, 2026, marking a historic moment for the country’s sporting calendar. The announcement was made by Solomon Muwonge, President of the Uganda Dragon Boat Federation, during a high-level meeting with Ambassador Richard Kabonero, Head of Regional Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting also welcomed officials from the Africa Dragon Boat Federation, including Mr. Ehab Gouda and General Secretary Ms. Mary Lai. Their visit aimed to assess Uganda’s preparedness for the continental competition, certify local officials, and inspect potential venues to ensure they meet international standards.
Ambassador Kabonero praised the federation’s efforts in promoting Dragon Boat racing in Uganda, noting that the event would provide young athletes with opportunities to hone their skills while presenting the country to global audiences. He emphasized that sports can strengthen people-to-people ties and elevate Uganda’s international profile.
Mr. Gouda revealed that the Africa Dragon Boat Cup is expected to attract more than 500 professional athletes from 16 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America. The event will draw both live spectators and millions of online viewers, offering Uganda substantial international exposure.
Dragon Boat racing, with origins in China over 2,500 years ago, now boasts over 50 million participants worldwide, including more than 40 million in China alone. The sport combines teamwork, endurance, and cultural heritage, making it a unique and increasingly popular global competition.
Ms. Lai highlighted that hosting the Africa Dragon Boat Cup presents Uganda with an opportunity to showcase its scenic waterways, hospitality, and tourism potential, while also opening avenues for investment and trade. She described the event as a gateway for promoting the country on the world stage.
The Uganda Dragon Boat Federation is collaborating with government agencies and international partners to ensure all logistical, operational, and training requirements are in place well ahead of the 2026 competition. Local officials will undergo certification to guarantee the tournament meets global standards.
By hosting this landmark event, Uganda aims to position itself as a premier destination for international sports competitions, enhance cultural diplomacy, and generate lasting economic and social benefits. The 2026 Africa Dragon Boat Cup promises to be a milestone in Uganda’s sporting history and its global engagement through athletics.
