Defence Minister Jacob Oboth Oboth has chosen a path of silence at a time when political voices are growing louder over the race for Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament. His lack of public declaration has not gone unnoticed, instead igniting speculation about whether he is carefully plotting his next political move behind the scenes.
Back in 2021, Oboth had shown clear ambition for the same position, positioning himself as a contender against the late Jacob Oulanyah. However, his bid was ultimately withdrawn following intervention from President Yoweri Museveni, a decision that surprised many who viewed him as a strong and capable candidate.
Now, as discussions around the next Speaker intensify, multiple aspirants have already stepped forward to express interest. In contrast, Oboth’s continued silence stands out, prompting observers to question whether it is a deliberate tactic rather than hesitation.
Some analysts believe that staying quiet allows him to assess the political terrain without exposing his strategy too early. In a race where alliances and timing are crucial, such restraint could offer him a strategic advantage over more vocal competitors.
Adding to the conversation, a youth pressure group known as the NRM Revolutionary Network has entered the debate, advocating for adherence to what it calls long-standing criteria in selecting a Speaker. Their intervention has further shaped the narrative around who is most qualified for the role.
According to the group, tradition suggests that the position should go to an individual who has either chaired the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee or participated in the Constituent Assembly. They argue that these benchmarks have historically defined the suitability of candidates.
Interestingly, Oboth’s résumé aligns with these expectations. His previous role as Chairperson of the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee during the 10th Parliament positions him as one of the few figures who meet the criteria being emphasized.
For now, the Defence Minister remains an enigmatic figure in the unfolding contest. Whether his silence signals caution, calculation, or an impending announcement, one thing is certain—his presence continues to loom large over the race, even without a single word spoken.
