Businessman and Honorary Consul of Namibia to Uganda, Godfrey Kirumira, has stirred conversation after voicing concern over what he considers a surprisingly low number of Ugandans owning Range Rover vehicles. Speaking at an exclusive gathering of affluent individuals, Kirumira argued that the scarcity of such luxury cars reflects a broader issue of limited wealth creation.
During his remarks, he emphasized the importance of working harder to accumulate wealth, suggesting that visible symbols of success—like high-end vehicles—should be more common among Uganda’s elite. According to him, prosperity should not only be earned but also expressed.
Kirumira recounted an attempt to identify owners of Range Rovers within their circles, noting that only a handful of names emerged. Among those he mentioned were Hamis Kiggundu and his brother Yasin Ssentongo, which he found unexpectedly few given the country’s growing class of wealthy individuals.
Despite admitting that he is not particularly fond of Range Rovers, Kirumira revealed that he now intends to purchase one himself. He justified this decision by pointing out their frequent use in high-profile events such as wedding convoys, where luxury vehicles often symbolize prestige and success.
His comments, however, have sparked debate, with some observers suggesting that his claims may be exaggerated. Many argue that Range Rovers are visibly present across Kampala, and that his perspective may be limited to a specific social or economic circle rather than the broader population.
Kirumira is no stranger to controversial opinions on wealth and lifestyle. At a 2023 wedding ceremony for city businessman Paul Ssembatya and Milly Nakibala, he criticized affluent Ugandans for what he described as failing to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
He questioned why wealthy individuals would choose to fly economy class, insisting that maintaining a certain standard is part of representing success. He even cited Susan Mirembe as an example of someone who embraces first-class travel.
Kirumira went further to highlight his own lifestyle, stating that he regularly flies first class and is considering transitioning to private jet travel. He suggested that such choices reflect a level of sophistication that aligns with his diplomatic role, adding that his status was no coincidence.
He also credited Prince Joseph Ndawula Ssajabi for supporting his diplomatic appointment, which was formalized when he presented his credentials to Henry Okello Oryem in May 2023. Even in moments of celebration, Kirumira’s message remains consistent—work hard, enjoy success, and don’t shy away from displaying it.
