Gen. David Muhoozi is set for a remarkable return to active military service after being recalled by the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), marking a new chapter in a career that has spanned more than four decades. The move comes shortly after his exclusion from the latest Cabinet reshuffle, where he served as State Minister for Internal Affairs.
Sources within the security establishment indicate that the decorated four-star General has been instructed to report back to the military leadership as preparations get underway for his redeployment. While confirmation of his recall has emerged, officials are yet to reveal the specific role he will assume within the armed forces.
His departure from government sparked intense debate among political observers and security analysts, many of whom questioned whether he was nearing retirement from public service. The latest development has instead signaled that the veteran officer remains a key figure in Uganda’s security architecture.
Gen. Muhoozi’s military journey dates back to the formative years of the National Resistance Army in the mid-1980s. Over the years, he steadily climbed the ranks, earning recognition through leadership positions that included commanding armored and motorized infantry units, as well as holding senior responsibilities within the Air Force and Air Defence structures.
His most prominent assignment came in 2017 when President Yoweri Museveni entrusted him with the position of Chief of Defence Forces. During his tenure at the helm of the UPDF, the military expanded its regional security footprint, advanced modernization initiatives, and reinforced Uganda’s role in regional peace and security operations.
In June 2021, Gen. Muhoozi transitioned from military command to national politics, taking up the role of State Minister for Internal Affairs. His leadership within the ministry contributed to oversight of critical sectors such as immigration services, citizenship matters, national identification programs, correctional services, and internal security coordination.
Many observers viewed his military expertise as an important asset in bridging cooperation between security agencies and civilian institutions. His experience in strategic planning and command helped strengthen coordination across sectors responsible for national stability and public administration.
As speculation continues over his next assignment, attention has shifted to what role awaits one of Uganda’s most seasoned military leaders. With an extensive background in defence, security management, and strategic leadership, Gen. Muhoozi’s return to the UPDF underscores that his influence in national service remains significant and that his journey in public leadership is far from finished.
