Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is stepping up efforts to improve public transportation in the city as its engineers, mechanics, and road safety experts visited the Kiira Motors manufacturing plant on Friday.
The visit reflects the Authority’s commitment to finding innovative and sustainable solutions that can address Kampala’s growing transport challenges while preparing the city for future mass transit systems.
The tour provided KCCA officials with an opportunity to closely examine the production of electric buses, which are increasingly becoming a key part of Uganda’s transport future.
As traffic congestion continues to affect movement across Kampala, city leaders are looking at modern transport technologies that can offer residents safer, cleaner, and more reliable travel options.
The visit comes at a significant time as Kiira Motors begins deploying electric buses on Kampala’s roads. Eight buses are already operating under the first phase of the rollout, marking an important milestone in efforts to modernize public transport. The buses are expected to improve the movement of passengers while reducing the environmental impact associated with conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
For KCCA, the introduction of electric buses aligns with broader plans to build a more efficient urban transport system. By engaging with manufacturers and transport experts, the Authority aims to better understand the technologies that could support future transport projects, including mass transit systems designed to serve the city’s rapidly growing population.
The interaction between KCCA officials and Kiira Motors engineers also created an opportunity to discuss road safety, vehicle maintenance, operational efficiency, and infrastructure requirements for electric mobility. These discussions are expected to contribute valuable insights as Kampala prepares for the next generation of public transportation solutions.
The partnership between KCCA and Kiira Motors demonstrates a shared vision of creating a modern, sustainable, and people-centered transport network. It also highlights the importance of locally developed innovations in addressing urban challenges while supporting Uganda’s industrial growth and technological advancement.
As Kampala continues to expand, investments in electric mobility and mass transit planning are becoming increasingly important. The visit to Kiira Motors sends a strong message that KCCA is committed to embracing innovation and working with key stakeholders to build a transport system that is cleaner, smarter, and capable of meeting the needs of a modern city.
