More than 20 passengers have been injured following a serious road accident involving a Nile Star bus along the Arua-Nebbi Road in Arua District. The accident happened on Monday, November 2, 2026, at around 8:45 pm in Enzeva Village, leaving several travellers with injuries and prompting an emergency response from the police and medical teams.
The accident involved an Isuzu bus, registration number UBF 621T, belonging to Nile Star Bus Company. According to preliminary police findings, the bus was travelling from Arua City to Kampala with several passengers on board when the driver reportedly attempted to overtake a trailer at a narrow section of the road in Enzeva Village.
Police investigations indicate that the driver lost control of the bus during the dangerous overtaking attempt. The vehicle subsequently veered off the road and overturned, throwing passengers into panic and leaving many of them injured. Residents and other road users reportedly responded to the scene as efforts were made to rescue the victims and arrange for medical assistance.
Josephine Angucia, the Police Spokesperson for the West Nile region, confirmed the accident and said police officers quickly responded to the scene. The injured passengers were evacuated and rushed to different health facilities, including Kuluva Hospital, Arua Regional Referral Hospital and other medical centres within Arua District and Arua City for first aid and further treatment.
Angucia also revealed that the bus was still at the accident scene under police guard as arrangements were being made to tow it to the police station for further examination. She explained that the driver initially fled the scene after the accident but later reported to Arua City Central Business Division Police Station, where he was arrested and detained to assist with investigations.
Police have attributed the accident to unlawful overtaking, warning motorists against making dangerous decisions on the road, especially when approaching narrow sections where visibility and space are limited. The spokesperson urged drivers to carefully assess road conditions before attempting to overtake other vehicles to avoid putting passengers and other road users at risk.
Some of the injured passengers admitted to Arua Regional Referral Hospital have been identified as Afakoru Gloria, Enzo Eveline, Mmulabe Vincent, Rwothomio Pius, Atusi Lucky, Mama Ricky, Joel Tshirenga, Nkumba Becky, Martha Tshibona, Boniface Cosmas, Stephen Anderini, Took George, Anguyo David, Kakule Davidio, Badda Charles, Sharon Rowthany, NKuza Lydia, Viola Nigiza, Aniku Scovia, Munguleni Brian, Arike Emmanuel, Ezama Mubarak, Joy Daru, Andu Flex, Zahara Fatibu and Antaazi Nathan, among others. Other victims were reportedly admitted to Church of Uganda Hospital in Arua District.
The police have confirmed that investigations into the accident are ongoing under Arua District TAR 54/2026, with the arrested driver expected to assist investigators in establishing the full circumstances surrounding the crash. The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety and the dangers of reckless overtaking, particularly on busy highways connecting different parts of the country.
