A heated political storm has erupted in Kampala after Beatrice Mao, wife to Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao, demanded that Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago resign immediately. She accuses him of failing to protect Kampala residents and traders from the devastating losses caused by the redevelopment of the Nakivubo drainage channel.
Speaking strongly on the matter, Beatrice Mao said Lukwago, as the political head of the city, must take responsibility for what she calls “total mismanagement” under his leadership. She argues that the Lord Mayor cannot continue blaming the technical wing of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) while he continues to earn from taxpayers.
According to her, the destruction and flooding around the Nakivubo channel—linked to businessman Hamis Kiggundu’s controversial construction works—show a failure in both oversight and accountability. She believes traders who lost their businesses and goods deserve compensation, and she insists Lukwago should be the first to pay.
Beatrice Mao did not stop there. She accused both the political and technical arms of KCCA of enabling illegal developments in the city. She claims that officials on both sides actively participated in shielding Kiggundu’s construction on the drainage channel, which she says was an open invitation to disaster.
Declaring her ambition to run for Kampala Lord Mayor, Beatrice Mao promised that if elected, her first mission would be to “clean out corruption” in the city. She stated that Kampala has suffered long enough under leaders who protect illegal activities instead of enforcing the law and safeguarding residents’ welfare.
The accusations have sparked widespread debate, with some Kampala residents supporting her bold stand, while others argue that the problem is broader than one office or one leader. However, her comments have certainly intensified political tension around the Nakivubo redevelopment controversy.
