Tension has erupted within one of Uganda’s most influential political couples after Minister Betty Amongi openly opposed her husband, Jimmy Akena, over his stand on the 2026 presidential elections. Amongi, who serves as the Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, warned Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) supporters not to follow Akena’s call to reject President Museveni.
While addressing UPC supporters in Lira City, Amongi reminded them that the decision on who to support for the 2026 presidency lies with the party’s top leadership—not with her husband, even though he is the party president. She stressed that Akena’s personal opinion should not mislead the party’s followers.

Amongi boldly told supporters, “Please don’t listen to his advice that you should not vote for Museveni.” Her statement sent shockwaves through the political space, as it directly contradicted Akena’s recent declarations discouraging support for the NRM candidate.
The Monday meeting where this confrontation happened reportedly grew tense. Amongi questioned Akena on why he suddenly decided to abandon Museveni, yet the two had entered what she described as a “political marriage” years ago. Their alliance had previously helped shape relations between UPC and the ruling party.
Faced with intense pressure and criticism from his own wife, Akena is said to have stormed out of the meeting. Witnesses reported that he got into his vehicle and drove straight to Akokoro, seeking space to cool down and reflect. The dramatic exit left attendees stunned.
Family sources have revealed that the political disagreement is now spilling into their personal lives. The relationship between the two leaders has been fragile for some time, and insiders say this recent clash may further widen the gap between them.
It has also emerged that Amongi and Akena sometimes go weeks without physically meeting, despite both holding important public roles. This has only increased speculation that their marriage is under strain, especially with elections drawing closer.

Supporters of both figures are now divided. Some believe Akena is right to reposition UPC ahead of 2026, while others argue that Amongi is being more practical by choosing stability through continued cooperation with the NRM. The division is causing uncertainty within the party ranks.
The unfolding drama also highlights the challenges of political marriages, where personal relationships often collide with shifting political interests. When the couple is influential, the impact is even greater, reaching both party members and the national political landscape.
As January 2026 approaches, all eyes will remain on the couple. Whether they reconcile politically—and personally—may determine UPC’s next steps. For now, their disagreement has become one of the most talked-about political stories in Uganda.
