A devastating accident in Kasozi Village has left the community in mourning after two young children were killed on Wednesday morning when a speeding truck rammed into a pedal cyclist who was carrying them. The tragic collision happened along the Ikonia–Nawampiti road at around 10:00 am.
The incident involved a blue Isuzu Elf truck, registration number UAW 081M, which hit the cyclist with such force that 13-year-old Waigolo Phillip and 8-year-old Malinzi Purity died instantly. Shockingly, the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled, prompting an urgent search by authorities.
Early police findings suggest that the truck was heading from Ikonia towards Nawampiti, while the cyclist rode from the opposite direction. It is believed that the driver lost control upon entering the busy village stretch, resulting in the sudden and fatal impact.
Police have since impounded the truck as investigators from the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV) begin a technical examination intended to determine the vehicle’s condition and any contributing mechanical issues. The bodies of the two children were taken to Kiyunga Health Centre IV for postmortem procedures.
Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson SSP Samson Lubega confirmed that a manhunt is underway to apprehend the runaway driver. He reassured the public that every effort is being made to establish the facts and ensure the suspect faces justice for the catastrophic loss of life.
The officer extended heartfelt sympathies to the grieving families, describing the deaths as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can be lost through careless road behaviour. He urged motorists to remain alert, particularly in rural communities where vulnerable road users often share narrow roads with fast-moving vehicles.
Residents in Kasozi have been left shaken by the tragedy, with many calling for stricter enforcement of speed limits and more visible road safety interventions. They say the growing number of accidents in the region reflects a broader national problem that needs urgent attention.
As investigations progress, authorities continue to remind drivers and cyclists alike that attentiveness and responsible road use are not optional—they are essential to saving lives and preventing more heartbreaking scenes like the one witnessed in Luuka.
