A significant wave of support has reached the maternity department of Entebbe Regional Referral Hospital after it secured medical equipment and supplies valued at UGX50 million. The contribution is set to reinforce maternal healthcare services at the referral facility, which serves as a critical lifeline for thousands of families across the region.
The funding emerged from a community-focused campaign initiated last year by Stanbic Bank Uganda in collaboration with Entebbe Golf Club. The initiative was designed to turn everyday activities into meaningful social impact, rallying golfers and the wider community around a shared cause—improving healthcare outcomes for mothers and newborns.
Dr. John Bosco Nsubuga, who heads the hospital, highlighted the heavy workload carried by the institution. With more than 5,000 surgeries conducted annually—around 75 percent of them Caesarean deliveries—the hospital often handles complicated referrals involving obstructed labour and excessive bleeding. He noted that the newly acquired equipment will directly strengthen the hospital’s emergency response capacity.
Arthur Kiwanuka, Head of Affluent Banking at Stanbic Bank, explained that the drive was built on small but consistent contributions. Every time a golfer paid green fees using the bank’s FlexiPay solution, UGX10,000 was earmarked for the health campaign. Over time, those individual payments grew into a sizeable fund capable of delivering lasting change.
Among the items delivered to the maternity unit are an infant warmer to protect newborns, a heavy-duty suction machine, a modern hydraulic operating theatre table, a standard Caesarean instrument set, an LED examination lamp, and 100 Mama Kits for expectant mothers. The selection was guided by the hospital’s most pressing needs to ensure maximum impact.
Kiwanuka further revealed that the donation forms part of the bank’s broader three-year UGX1 trillion development agenda targeting women, youth, and farmers. He stated that nearly 85 health facilities across the country have already benefited from similar assistance, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to community advancement.
The partnership between the bank and the golf club has traditionally revolved around tournaments such as the Match Play series and the Entebbe Open. However, this latest effort demonstrates a shift from purely sporting collaboration to initiatives that directly uplift communities and improve quality of life.
Serwano Walusimbi, Captain of Entebbe Golf Club, described the project as a reflection of unity and compassion. He emphasized that beyond promoting fitness and networking, the club now stands as a platform for meaningful social contribution. He pledged continued support to initiatives that safeguard mothers and ensure safer childbirth experiences in the community.
