Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has called on commanders of the Special Forces Command (SFC) to remain ahead of changing security trends by adopting modern military technology and improving operational readiness.
Gen. Kainerugaba made the call during a command handover ceremony at the SFC headquarters in Entebbe, where Maj. Gen. David Mugisha officially handed over leadership of the elite force to Maj. Gen. Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru.
The CDF said the nature of warfare around the world is rapidly changing, requiring military commanders to continuously study new developments, strengthen their skills and incorporate emerging technologies into defence operations.
He urged SFC officers to focus on innovation, modern training methods and strategic planning, noting that success in contemporary security operations depends on the ability of forces to adapt to new challenges.
Gen. Kainerugaba reflected on the growth of the Special Forces Command, recalling that when he began his military training at Sera Kasenyi Training School in 1994, the unit had limited facilities and resources compared to its current structure.
He said the SFC has undergone significant transformation over the years, evolving from the Presidential Protection Unit into a specialised command responsible for special operations, protection of strategic national installations and other critical security assignments.
The CDF congratulated Maj. Gen. Mugisha upon completing his tenure as commander and said he would proceed for further studies at the National Defence College abroad as part of continued professional military development.
Gen. Kainerugaba expressed confidence in Maj. Gen. Nyakikuru’s leadership, saying his experience and previous role as acting commander had prepared him to take on the responsibilities of leading the SFC.
Maj. Gen. Mugisha thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF, and Gen. Kainerugaba for the opportunity to serve, while Maj. Gen. Nyakikuru pledged to strengthen the command and uphold the standards of the specialised force. The ceremony was attended by senior UPDF officers and commanders.
