Veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda has shared his views on what he believes contributed to the political troubles surrounding former Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among.
Mwenda said the issue was not about Anita Among’s wealth, luxury lifestyle or the famous Rolls Royce associated with her name.
According to him, the bigger concern was the influence and power she had continued to accumulate while serving as Speaker of Parliament.
Speaking during an interview, Mwenda argued that Anita Among’s growing political influence became a major factor in the challenges she later faced.
“It wasn’t about the Rolls Royce or her money, it was about her influence,” Mwenda said.
He explained that powerful political figures often attract attention because of the networks and authority they build over time.

Mwenda said Anita Among had become one of the most influential figures in Uganda’s political landscape during her time as Speaker.
She rose through the ranks quickly, becoming Speaker of Parliament in 2022 after serving as Deputy Speaker.
During her tenure, Anita Among became known for her strong leadership style and close relationships with different political actors.
Mwenda suggested that her increasing influence made her a significant figure in national politics.
He argued that public discussions about her lifestyle sometimes overshadowed what he believes was the real issue — her growing political power.
The journalist said wealthy leaders are not uncommon in politics, but influence and control over political structures often attract more attention.
Anita Among has faced criticism over her wealth, leadership style and decisions made during her time as Speaker.
She has also received strong support from allies who describe her as a hardworking leader who transformed Parliament.
Mwenda said the debate around her should focus beyond material possessions and examine the wider political dynamics.
He noted that political influence can sometimes become a source of tension among powerful individuals and institutions.

The former Speaker has remained a key figure in Uganda’s political discussions despite stepping away from the leadership of Parliament.
Her supporters continue to defend her achievements, while critics have raised questions about her leadership and accumulation of influence.
Mwenda’s comments have sparked fresh debate among Ugandans about power, wealth and political relationships.
The remarks come amid continued public interest in the rise and challenges faced by prominent political figures.
According to Mwenda, Anita Among’s situation was not simply about luxury or personal wealth but about the level of influence she had gained.
He said understanding political power dynamics is important when analysing the challenges faced by high-ranking leaders.
