Tensions in Uganda’s political landscape escalated this week as 43 members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) were remanded by Mbarara Magistrate’s Court following their arrest en route to a rally for party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine. The arrests have sparked debates about political space, legal processes, and the rights of opposition supporters in the country.
The suspects, whose ages range from young activists to seasoned party foot soldiers, were caught on their way to Bwizibwera, where a rally had been planned to energize supporters ahead of the 2026 elections. Police charged 38 individuals with obstruction of duty, while the remaining five faced traffic-related offences including driving without a license, riding without a helmet, and lacking third-party insurance.

During a marathon four-hour hearing presided over by Grade One Magistrate Esther Bagala, each of the 43 suspects had their charges read out individually. Among those facing traffic offences were Adrian Taremwa, Khasim Mugambe, Godius Mwesigwa, and Moses Mugabi. Their presence in court highlighted the intersection of ordinary civic life and politically charged arrests in Uganda.
The suspects were represented by seven defense lawyers, including prominent legal practitioners Shamim Malende, Allan Musasire, Joshua Tumukunde, Modern Atuhaire, and Deusdedit Bwengye. The legal team argued for a careful and fair process, raising concerns about the impact of prolonged remand on both the accused and their families.
State Attorney Rebecca Akulia requested that the court remand the suspects until November 19 to allow the prosecution sufficient time to prepare for hearings and bail applications. She stressed the importance of thorough preparation given the complex nature of politically linked cases.
Defense lawyers were quick to push back. Allan Musasire emphasized that prolonged delays infringe on the rights of the accused and undermine the principles of timely justice. Deusdedit Bwengye reminded the court that under Ugandan law, the state is responsible for bearing the costs of adjournments if delays are caused by prosecution inefficiency.
Beyond the immediate charges, lawyers highlighted a deeper concern: several of the accused are candidates contesting various positions in upcoming elections. Expedited hearings, they argued, are crucial to protect political participation rights and ensure that campaign activities are not unfairly disrupted.

Family members of the accused, many seeing their loved ones in court for the first time since Friday’s arrests, expressed mixed emotions. Relief at the remand decision was coupled with worry over the length of the legal process and the potential impact on upcoming elections.
Observers note that the arrests and subsequent remand come at a sensitive political moment. With election campaigns intensifying, the treatment of opposition foot soldiers sends a strong message to both supporters and detractors, fueling conversations about freedom of assembly, expression, and fair political competition.
As the NUP and its supporters await the next court session, the wider public watches closely. The case underscores the fragile balance between law enforcement, political expression, and electoral rights in Uganda, and demonstrates the high stakes for those on the frontlines of opposition politics in the country.
