A young schoolgirl in Kibuku recently shared a heart-wrenching story that left President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni visibly moved. During a rally at Kibuku Primary School, the girl revealed that she had once considered taking her own life because of the lack of opportunities and the pressure of school fees. Her confession cast a spotlight on the hidden struggles many Ugandan children face, often silently, when poverty and illegal school charges block their education.
President Museveni used the emotional moment to stress the importance of strong community support systems for young people. He reminded Ugandans that despair often comes not from laziness but from circumstances, where children are denied the chance to learn and grow. “One of the girls told me she was thinking of killing herself,” Museveni recounted. “But when she joined the skilling hub, she found hope.”

The girl’s story highlighted the harsh reality that education in Uganda, while theoretically free, often comes with hidden fees that push children to the brink. Museveni warned that school fees are not just financial burdens—they are “killing the future” of many young Ugandans. Illegal charges and administrative hurdles, he said, sabotage government efforts to provide free education.
Museveni also recounted the positive changes brought by the Presidential Skilling Hubs in eastern Uganda. He noted that within six months, students at these hubs were producing goods previously imported from China, creating hope and tangible skills for young people who otherwise had no pathway to employment. “No child should ever feel like ending their life because they lack school fees,” he emphasized.
Beyond education, the President stressed the link between infrastructure, peace, and household wealth creation. Roads, electricity, schools, and health centers, he said, create the environment for development—but families must also take responsibility for generating wealth through agriculture, small enterprises, and the four-acre model promoted by government programs.
Museveni said that jobs do not come solely from government positions. According to him, Uganda’s 1.3 million factory workers benefit from a broader ecosystem of services, business, and agricultural production. He urged leaders implementing the Parish Development Model to ensure that all households participate in the money economy rather than relying solely on subsistence farming.
During the rally, the President announced plans to revisit and strengthen the free-education policy after the elections, using stories like that of the Kibuku schoolgirl as guiding examples. The initiative, he said, will be backed by skilling hubs to ensure that no young person is left behind simply because their family cannot afford school fees.
NRM leaders also rallied in support of the President. Vice Chairperson for Central Region, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, called on residents to vote for Museveni and all NRM candidates, while District Chairperson Hajji Shalif Ssebakaki praised the Presidential Skilling Hub and called for its expansion to reach more young people.

The rally sent a clear message that Uganda’s transformation depends on combining peace, infrastructure, wealth creation, and education. Museveni highlighted that development is not just about building schools and hospitals—it is about ensuring that no child feels abandoned or hopeless because of poverty or lack of access to opportunity.
In closing, Museveni emphasized that the government, communities, and families must work together to ensure young people are protected, supported, and given opportunities to thrive. The story of one schoolgirl in Kibuku served as a powerful reminder that the country’s future rests not only on policies and programs but on the hope and resilience of its youth.
