Uganda’s digital landscape is advancing at an impressive pace, marking significant progress in the country’s journey toward a more connected and technology-driven future. According to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), recent developments in telecommunications and digital infrastructure reflect a growing commitment to expanding access and creating opportunities for millions of citizens.
The latest figures reveal a remarkable increase in mobile connectivity across the country. Registered mobile subscriptions surged from 57.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 61.6 million in the first quarter of 2026, demonstrating the growing demand for communication services and digital solutions in both urban and rural communities.
This growth in mobile penetration represents more than increased phone usage. It signifies broader access to information, digital financial services, online learning, healthcare solutions, and countless opportunities that are helping to transform lives and strengthen communities across the nation.
UCC also reported substantial progress in the expansion of Uganda’s national fibre network. Fibre coverage increased from 62,941 kilometres to 71,740 kilometres within just one quarter, reinforcing the infrastructure needed to support faster, more reliable, and more accessible internet services.
The country’s telecommunications network has further benefited from the growth in telecom tower infrastructure. The number of towers increased from 5,493 to 5,578, improving network coverage, enhancing service quality, and supporting the rapidly growing demand for connectivity.
These developments are creating a stronger digital ecosystem that empowers individuals, businesses, educational institutions, and government agencies. Improved connectivity is helping to bridge geographical barriers while fostering greater participation in the digital economy.
For entrepreneurs and businesses, the expansion of digital infrastructure provides a platform for innovation, growth, and competitiveness. Enhanced internet access enables organizations to embrace digital technologies, reach new markets, and improve operational efficiency in an increasingly interconnected world.
As Uganda accelerates its digital transformation agenda, UCC emphasizes that continued investment in communications infrastructure remains critical. The steady growth in subscriptions, fibre networks, and telecom towers is laying the groundwork for a future defined by innovation, inclusion, and sustainable economic development.
