The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is set to begin a major retirement exercise today, with more than 200 junior officers and about 1,300 militants expected to leave active service across various formations around the country.
The exercise will see over 220 senior officers officially retired during a ceremony at the UPDF Joint Services Headquarters in Mbuya, marking another significant transition within Uganda’s armed forces.
A separate ceremonial send-off for 19 generals, including Minister of Public Service General Katumba Wamala, will be held at a later date, with details of the event expected to be communicated by the UPDF.
The retirement programme forms part of the UPDF’s established process of honouring personnel who have completed their service and preparing the institution for a new generation of officers and soldiers.
According to UPDF Deputy Spokesperson Colonel Chris Magezi, the exercise represents the 16th batch of personnel to undergo retirement under the army’s established arrangements.
The UPDF described the occasion as another milestone in its tradition of recognising service, sacrifice and patriotism among its personnel.
The retirement of the officers and militants is expected to take place through formal send-off activities across different formations, allowing the institution to recognise their contribution to the country’s defence and security.
As the latest batch begins its transition from military service to civilian life, the UPDF is expected to continue the process of preparing and integrating new personnel into its ranks while honouring those who have served.
