Zahara Luyirika, the National Unity Platform (NUP) Member of Parliament for Makindye West, has strongly dismissed reports claiming that she attended a Dua hosted by the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament.
In a brief statement issued on Saturday, Luyirika described the circulating claims as false and misleading, distancing herself from earlier reports linking her to the religious gathering.
“I strongly refute the false reports circulating that I attended Rt. Hon. Speaker’s Dua. This is completely untrue. I did not attend any Dua, I have not spoken to any media, and I am not contesting for any position. I urge the public to disregard this misinformation,” she said.
The clarification follows widespread online discussions suggesting that several opposition legislators, particularly from NUP, had participated in a religious event hosted by the Speaker. The reports had sparked debate on social media, with some commentators interpreting attendance at such events as politically significant amid ongoing tensions between the ruling establishment and opposition figures.
Luyirika, however, emphasized that she neither attended the said gathering nor granted any interviews regarding the matter. She also dismissed suggestions that she was seeking any parliamentary or party leadership position, calling such claims baseless.
Her statement comes at a time of heightened political sensitivity, where cross-party engagements and religious events involving political leaders often attract scrutiny in Uganda’s polarized environment.
By categorically denying involvement, Luyirika sought to set the record straight and quell speculation surrounding her name.
“I urge the public to disregard this misinformation,” she reiterated, signaling her intent to distance herself from what she termed inaccurate reporting.
As of press time, there had been no official response from parliamentary authorities regarding the claims she addressed.
