The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has stepped up its efforts to make Uganda’s roads safer through a nationwide community campaign under the theme “Community Involvement in Road Safety.” Recent workshops in Kira, Busoga East, and Bukedi Region brought together road users and community leaders to explore practical ways to prevent road accidents.
The sessions were led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Kananura Michael, the Directorate’s Community Liaison Officer, alongside regional traffic officers. Participants included taxi drivers, boda boda riders, religious leaders, local council members, teachers, students, and other stakeholders. The workshops encouraged open discussions about road safety challenges and ways to improve discipline among motorists.
SP Kananura reminded drivers and riders of the dangers of overspeeding and reckless driving, particularly on highways. He urged all road users to respect speed limits, drive responsibly, and seek proper training before using public roads. He emphasized that most accidents can be avoided if everyone follows traffic rules.
To support participants in spreading the road safety message, the Directorate distributed educational materials including banners, stickers, charts, and translated versions of the Highway Code. These tools aim to make road safety information accessible to all, including those who prefer content in local languages.
This initiative forms part of the Directorate’s ongoing nationwide drive to reduce road crashes and promote responsible behavior among road users. By engaging communities directly, the Directorate hopes to build a culture of awareness, accountability, and respect on Uganda’s roads—because saving lives begins with individual responsibility.
