Kampala traders are celebrating as the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has started removing structures along the Nakivubo Channel to improve drainage in the city.
The redevelopment aims to prevent the frequent flooding that has troubled downtown Kampala, destroying property and disrupting businesses. Residents and business owners have long complained about the persistent waterlogging during heavy rains.
KCCA has partnered with local tycoon Hamis Kiggundu, popularly known as Ham, to implement the drainage improvement project. His company, Kiham Enterprise Ltd, is leading the construction work alongside KCCA engineers.
Officials say the project involves clearing obstructive structures, widening drainage channels, and installing new water flow systems that will reduce flooding risk in the city center.
Traders expressed excitement at the initiative, saying it will safeguard their shops and boost business activity. Many had suffered losses in past flood seasons when their premises were submerged.
“This is good news for us. Finally, we can work without worrying that heavy rains will destroy our goods,” said one trader in downtown Kampala.
KCCA engineers explained that the redevelopment is a long-term solution designed to handle large volumes of water during the rainy season. They emphasized that proper maintenance will be key to ensuring lasting results.
Residents also welcomed the move, noting that aside from protecting businesses, it will improve sanitation and reduce the risk of waterborne diseases caused by stagnant water.
The project is expected to take several months, with engineers promising minimal disruption to traffic and daily activities. KCCA and Kiham Enterprise Ltd aim to complete it efficiently to bring relief to the city’s population.
With this redevelopment, downtown Kampala is set to enjoy better drainage, safer business operations, and a flood-free environment, marking a positive step toward a modern and resilient city.
