National Unity Platform (NUP) supporter Olivia Lutaaya has been sent back to Luzira Prison just a year after receiving a presidential pardon. The development comes amid mounting tensions as Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections.
On Tuesday, Ms. Lutaaya appeared before the Kanyanya Magistrate’s Court in Kawempe, where she was formally charged with unlawful drilling. The charge relates to alleged paramilitary-style training activities at NUP offices in Kampala.

Lutaaya was arrested last week in Mbarara District along with several other NUP supporters while participating in the campaign trail for NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
Prosecution confirmed that Ms. Lutaaya has been added to the same case file as NUP Deputy Spokesperson Waiswa Mufumbiro, Edward Ssebuufu, also known as Eddie Mutwe, and other party members who are currently on remand for similar charges.
The re-arrest is a dramatic twist for Ms. Lutaaya, who had spent three years on remand previously. She was initially accused of treachery and acts prejudicial to national security but was released last year following a presidential pardon from the Makindye-based General Court Martial.
During Monday’s proceedings, court officials confirmed that Ms. Lutaaya and other accused individuals would be remanded pending further investigations. The legal process is expected to continue as authorities gather more evidence.
The move has reignited debate about Uganda’s political climate, with critics saying that opposition figures continue to face harassment and intimidation. Many see this as part of a wider effort to suppress dissent ahead of the 2026 elections.

The National Unity Platform has not yet issued an official statement regarding Lutaaya’s re-arrest. However, party members have previously condemned similar arrests, describing them as politically motivated and aimed at disrupting opposition campaigns.
Analysts argue that such developments highlight ongoing concerns about freedom of political expression and the safety of opposition supporters in Uganda. The situation has attracted both national and international attention.
Ms. Lutaaya’s return to prison underscores the challenges faced by opposition figures in Uganda, while raising broader questions about justice, political rights, and the use of legal systems in election-related conflicts.
