In a shocking case of fraud, Kampala socialite Faridah Nabirumbi has been arrested and sent to Luzira prison after being accused of scamming a Ugandan job seeker of Shs 27 million. Nabirumbi, who is associated with a local tour and travel company, allegedly convinced the victim, a man named Sseruma, that she could secure him a lucrative job opportunity in Canada. However, it was all part of a scam that has left Sseruma devastated and out of pocket.
The incident reportedly took place at Karibu Restaurant, where Nabirumbi met with Sseruma and promised him the opportunity of a lifetime — a chance to work in Canada. According to the prosecution, Nabirumbi used her position and influence to manipulate Sseruma, persuading him that she could help him find a job abroad. The victim, eager for a better future, agreed to pay the substantial sum of Shs 27 million to Nabirumbi in order to cover the supposed costs of processing his job application and travel arrangements.
Sseruma testified in court that he made the payments in installments, using both cash and mobile money transfers, in the belief that this was a legitimate transaction. He handed over the money willingly, trusting that Nabirumbi would fulfill her promise. However, after the payments were made, it became clear that there was no job, and no trip to Canada was ever going to happen.
Nabirumbi, on the other hand, allegedly accepted all the payments without raising any suspicion, leading to her eventual arrest when the scam was uncovered. She reportedly even acknowledged receiving the money, but failed to deliver any of the services she had promised. As the case went public, it shocked many in Kampala, where Nabirumbi had gained some notoriety for her flashy lifestyle and connections within the social scene.
This case highlights the growing issue of scams and fraudulent activities targeting vulnerable individuals, especially those seeking better opportunities abroad. Many Ugandans have been lured by false promises of jobs or better lives in countries like Canada, only to fall victim to fraudulent agents and scammers. The fact that Nabirumbi worked within a travel and tour company further added to the victim’s trust in her, making the scam all the more devastating.
The arrest and imprisonment of Nabirumbi comes as a warning to others who may think they can take advantage of innocent people seeking opportunities. The Ugandan justice system has vowed to hold those involved in scams like this accountable, with Nabirumbi now facing serious legal consequences for her actions. Her case has stirred up much debate in the public, with many questioning the ethics of those involved in travel and job placement services, and calling for stricter regulations in the industry.
Sseruma, the victim of this scam, has expressed both anger and disappointment, noting how his hopes for a better future were dashed by Nabirumbi’s deceit. He has vowed to continue seeking justice and to warn others about the dangers of trusting people who promise opportunities that seem too good to be true. Meanwhile, Nabirumbi will remain in Luzira prison as she awaits further legal proceedings, and the case continues to unfold.
As the story gains traction, it serves as a stark reminder to Ugandans to be cautious when dealing with individuals or companies that claim to offer overseas job opportunities. It also highlights the importance of verifying any offers before making large payments, especially in an age where scams and fraud are becoming increasingly sophisticated. For now, Nabirumbi’s arrest is a clear message that fraud will not be tolerated, and those who exploit the dreams and aspirations of others will face the consequences.
