Youth representatives in Iganga District are calling on the government to set up specialized skilling and mentorship hubs to ensure that the funds disbursed under the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP) are utilized effectively.
The call was made during the delayed International Youth Day celebrations at the district headquarters. Participants praised President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his continued focus on youth empowerment through initiatives such as Emyooga and the allocation of 30% of resources in various government programs to young people.
The event, themed “Empowering Youth Through Technology and Partnerships,” also witnessed a leadership handover within the district’s Youth League. Outgoing Chairperson Dhaala Sanon, now Deputy RDC for Masindi District, officially handed over to his successor, Gwaita Franco.
Gwaita stressed that while financial support is important, it must be paired with technical guidance.
“Tripling the PDM funding is a great step, allowing approximately 90 young people to access support annually. However, without training hubs and mentorship programs, the money may not be invested wisely,” Gwaita explained.
He further noted that despite the reach of PDM and YLP, the lack of practical skills has sometimes led to mismanagement of funds. “Even if a youth receives Shs5 million, without the right knowledge, it may not translate into a sustainable business or livelihood,” he added.
The celebrations, hosted by Iganga Woman MP Hon. Sauda Kauma Alibaawo, drew hundreds of young participants from across the district. Performances by prominent artists such as Bebe Cool, Acidic Vokoz, and local Busoga entertainers energized the audience, urging youths to engage in national development and support President Museveni ahead of the 2026 elections.
Hon. Alibaawo commended the government’s efforts to empower youth through PDM and the Ghetto Youths Programme but stressed that more targeted interventions are needed to tackle unemployment.
“The allocation of Shs100 million per district for ghetto youths is commendable. Yet, many young people in Iganga remain unsupported. We need programs that leave no one behind,” she said.
Outgoing Youth League Chairperson Dhaala Sanon echoed the sentiment, urging sustained youth empowerment and highlighting the NRM government’s consistent focus on improving youth livelihoods and inclusion.
