Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has temporarily closed Ben Kiwanuka Road to traffic as contractors undertake major road construction works in the heart of Kampala.
The closure took effect on August 18, 2026, and is expected to remain in place until September 5, 2026, with authorities saying the restriction is necessary to allow construction teams to work without interference.
According to KCCA, contractors require unrestricted access to carry out heavy excavation, rock filling and drainage works along the busy city-centre route.
The authority announced the temporary closure in a public notice issued on August 17, saying the works are being accelerated to ensure key sections are completed before the seasonal rains intensify.
Ben Kiwanuka Road serves a heavily congested commercial area and provides an important connection to several streets in central Kampala. Its closure is therefore expected to affect motorists, pedestrians and businesses operating along and around the route.
To manage the expected traffic disruption, KCCA said traffic police would be deployed to guide motorists, while warning signs and diversion routes would be clearly marked to direct road users.
Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes including Sebaana Road, Sikh Road, Buxton Street, Burton Street, Market Street, Kiyembe Lane, Ssewanyana Bin Amir Road, Namirembe Road, Entebbe Road, Nsambya Road and Mukwano Road.
KCCA appealed to the public to cooperate with traffic management measures during the construction period, saying the works are aimed at delivering a safer and more efficient road network for Kampala.:::
