City lawyer Agaba Maguru is facing a crucial legal battle after the Uganda Law Council fixed July 10, 2026, for a disciplinary hearing over allegations arising from the contentious estate of late businessman James Musinguzi Garuga.
In a hearing notice issued on June 11, 2026, the Law Council’s Disciplinary Committee directed Maguru, advocate Ferdinand Byamugisha and lawyer Mugabe R. Ruranga to appear before it after determining that a prima facie case had been established against them.
The complaint was lodged by Musinguzi Carl Alwyn Garuga, a son and heir of the deceased tycoon, who accuses the lawyers of professional misconduct, unlawful dealings involving estate assets and irregular transactions connected to companies associated with his late father.
According to the notice, the advocates must appear before the committee on July 10 at 11:00 a.m. and submit any documents they intend to rely on during the proceedings.
The disciplinary case stems from a bitter and escalating dispute over the vast business empire left behind by James Musinguzi Garuga, whose death in August 2025 sparked multiple court battles involving family members, company officials and individuals linked to his businesses.
Alwyn Garuga alleges that estate assets and company property were improperly handled following his father’s death.
The complaint raises questions over disputed land transactions, management of company funds and the legality of decisions allegedly made without the required approvals.
The Law Council’s decision to proceed to a full hearing marks a significant development in the ongoing saga and places the spotlight squarely on the three advocates named in the complaint.
While the committee has not made any finding of guilt, its determination that a prima facie case exists means the allegations are considered serious enough to warrant a formal hearing and response from the lawyers involved.
The July 10 hearing is expected to draw considerable public attention given the value of the assets at stake and the growing legal wrangles surrounding the Garuga estate.
For Maguru and his co-respondents, the date represents a critical test as they prepare to answer allegations that could have far-reaching professional and legal consequences should misconduct ultimately be established.
