Police have carried out large-scale operations across the Kampala Metropolitan area in a renewed effort to curb rising criminal activities. The operations targeted individuals suspected of engaging in phone snatching, robberies, drug abuse, and other crimes that have recently raised concern among residents.
According to police, the crackdown followed intelligence reports and complaints from members of the public about criminal gangs operating in several identified black spots. The operations covered areas under Wandegeya, Kira Road, Nansana, Kirinya, and Jinja Road policing divisions.
In Old Mulago and Lower Nsoba under Wandegeya Police Division, officers arrested 16 suspects during a night patrol operation. Police said the suspects were found loitering in the area under suspicious circumstances, with some unable to clearly identify themselves while others were reportedly involved in drug abuse and gambling.
Another operation was conducted in Kamwokya and along Mawanda Road under Kira Road Police Division. During the exercise, eight suspects believed to be involved in phone snatching and drug-related activities were arrested from areas that have previously been identified as crime hotspots.
Police also extended the operation to Nansana Police Division, where 10 male suspects were arrested. Authorities reported that the suspects were found with suspected narcotics, and investigations into the matter are currently ongoing.
In Kirinya and surrounding areas including Kito A, Kito B, Namataba, and Kirinya Main, police arrested eight suspects during another targeted operation. The suspects are believed to be linked to cases of bag snatching, assault on members of the public, house break-ins, and burglaries reported in the area.
Police said suspected narcotics were recovered during the operations, and the exhibits have been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department to support further investigations. Authorities are working to establish the full extent of the suspects’ involvement in criminal activities.
Police have assured the public that similar operations will continue across Kampala as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal groups and improve security. Residents have also been encouraged to keep sharing information that can help security agencies fight crime more effectively.
