Uganda Airlines has embarked on a bold journey to transform the country’s aviation sector, signing a Shs3.7 trillion deal with Boeing to acquire 10 new aircraft. The historic agreement, witnessed by President Yoweri Museveni at State House on June 11, 2026, signals a major step toward expanding Uganda’s global connectivity and boosting the national carrier’s capabilities.
The new fleet includes eight passenger aircraft and two cargo freighters, with the cargo planes comprising a Boeing 767 wide-body converted freighter and a Boeing 737 Boeing Converted Freighter. These additions are expected to strengthen both passenger and freight operations, enabling faster, more efficient movement of people and goods.
The signing ceremony brought together senior government officials, Boeing representatives, United States Embassy staff, Uganda Airlines board members, and aviation sector stakeholders, underscoring the strategic importance of the deal for the country’s economic and transport ambitions.
Uganda Airlines described the acquisition as a cornerstone of its long-term growth strategy. By increasing its fleet, the airline aims to extend its reach across Africa and international destinations, improve service reliability, and provide more flight options for both business and leisure travelers.
The expanded fleet is also expected to support trade and investment by facilitating smoother cargo operations. Key sectors such as agriculture, minerals, and manufacturing stand to benefit from improved access to international markets, while exporters will gain a more reliable channel for delivering goods abroad.
Tourism in Uganda is projected to gain momentum from the airline’s growth. With increased passenger capacity and enhanced route networks, the country hopes to attract more visitors, showcase its attractions, and position itself as a competitive destination for both leisure and business tourism.
The investment aligns with Uganda Vision 2040, the government’s long-term blueprint for economic transformation and sustainable development. A strengthened aviation sector is seen as pivotal for accelerating trade, creating jobs, and connecting Uganda to global opportunities more effectively.
Beyond the purchase of aircraft, the agreement establishes a long-term partnership with Boeing. The company has pledged ongoing technical support, training programs, and capacity-building initiatives, ensuring Uganda Airlines has the expertise and resources necessary to fully leverage its expanded fleet and emerge as a regional aviation hub.
