Vivo Energy Uganda is making significant strides in promoting sustainable cooking practices by hosting a groundbreaking Gas Cooking Workshop at Mengo Senior School today, Friday 21 November. The event, attended by head teachers from Church of Uganda-founded schools, is aimed at showcasing the benefits of transitioning to modern cooking solutions with Shell Gas. Led by Mr. Alvin Bamutire, LPG Manager at Vivo Energy Uganda, the workshop highlights how the company is providing schools with safer, cleaner, and more efficient cooking systems.
At the heart of the workshop is a demonstration of large-capacity LPG systems, including professionally installed tanks and piping that supply consistent energy to institutional kitchens. These systems represent a transformative shift from traditional cooking methods, eliminating the need for firewood and charcoal. By adopting Shell Gas, schools are aligning with Uganda’s national commitment to sustainable energy solutions and significantly reducing their environmental footprint.
The switch to LPG offers numerous ecological benefits, particularly in the fight against deforestation. As schools transition to gas cooking, the demand for firewood and charcoal decreases, leading to fewer trees being cut down for fuel. This contributes to a greener, more resilient environment, helping to preserve Uganda’s natural resources for future generations.
Joanita Mukasa Menya, Managing Director at Vivo Energy Uganda, emphasized the positive impact of the project, particularly for school chefs. “With LPG, chefs no longer need to cook throughout the night. Meals can now be prepared in the morning, just like in any other modern kitchen. This saves time, reduces stress, and most importantly, protects cooks from the harmful effects of smoke inhalation,” she noted. The shift not only improves the working conditions in kitchens but also supports the health and well-being of those who work there.
By eliminating soot and smoke associated with traditional biomass cooking, LPG systems also enhance the health and safety of school kitchens. This transition reduces the risk of respiratory illnesses caused by prolonged exposure to harmful emissions, offering a safer, more comfortable environment for kitchen staff. The switch to gas also means fewer health risks for students who may have previously been exposed to smoke-filled dining halls.
The economic advantages of LPG are equally compelling. Many schools spend considerable amounts on firewood, which often becomes more expensive due to scarcity and transportation costs. LPG offers a more cost-effective and predictable solution, with refills based on consumption, allowing schools to better manage their operating expenses. This shift toward more efficient energy use promises long-term financial savings for institutions.
LPG systems also streamline kitchen operations, providing instant heat that allows meals to be prepared more quickly. This efficiency reduces the workload for kitchen staff and ensures that students receive timely meals. The ease of use and reliability of LPG cooking solutions is transforming school kitchens, improving both productivity and the overall dining experience for students.
To support this transition, Vivo Energy Uganda is providing comprehensive training for school staff on how to operate and maintain LPG systems safely. The training covers critical areas such as safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and best practices for managing energy within institutional kitchens. By equipping school staff with the knowledge to safely use these modern cooking technologies, Vivo Energy Uganda is ensuring that the adoption of Shell Gas will be both sustainable and secure.
Vivo Energy Uganda’s commitment to clean cooking technology is not just about improving the way schools prepare meals; it’s about creating a cleaner, safer, and more efficient future for Uganda. Through this collaboration with Church of Uganda schools, Vivo Energy is setting a powerful example of how sustainable energy solutions can transform communities and institutions.
