In a solemn and heartfelt ceremony, the Chinese community in Uganda gathered to commemorate four Chinese experts who tragically lost their lives three decades ago during the construction of Uganda’s national stadium.
The event, held on the northeastern side of the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, brought together representatives from the Chinese Embassy and various Chinese institutions in Uganda, all dressed in somber black attire.
As part of the ceremony, floral tributes were laid at the memorial site, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the four individuals whose work still reverberates in the heart of Uganda’s sports development. The stadium, a symbol of progress and international cooperation, stands as a testament to the enduring bond between China and Uganda.
Fan Xuecheng, the charge d’affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, delivered an emotional tribute. He reflected on the enduring spirit of the four experts and their commitment to the shared destiny of the two nations. Their efforts, he emphasized, were not just about constructing a stadium, but about laying the foundation for a lasting friendship between China and Uganda.
The tragic deaths of Hu Yexing, Kong Huiping, Bao Jinping, and Wang Guorui in 1996, due to a traffic accident, left a deep scar on the Chinese community in Uganda. However, their legacy has lived on, etched into every brick and every corner of the stadium they helped create. The building is more than just a sports venue; it is a monument to the sacrifices that laid the groundwork for China-Uganda relations.
The ceremony took place just one day before China’s Qingming Festival, a traditional time for honoring ancestors and remembering those who have passed. This timing served as a powerful reminder of the cultural ties that bind China and Uganda, both in life and death, as well as the importance of commemorating those who contribute to a nation’s development.
The memory of these four experts continues to inspire the Chinese community in Uganda. Their devotion to their work and to Uganda’s growth remains a shining example of internationalism and the power of collaborative efforts. Through their work, they have left behind more than just a physical structure; they have crafted a legacy that transcends time and borders.
The Mandela National Stadium now stands as an enduring symbol of what can be accomplished when nations come together with a common purpose. It is not just a place where sports are played, but a reminder of the shared history between China and Uganda and the human cost of progress.
As Uganda continues to develop, the memorial serves as a focal point for all those who visit, urging them to remember the contributions of the past while looking forward to the future. The spirits of Hu, Kong, Bao, and Wang are forever woven into the fabric of Uganda’s sports history, and their legacy lives on in every victory celebrated at the stadium.
