Ugandan journalist and media professional Raymond Mujuni has taken a major step beyond the newsroom after being appointed Senior Policy Adviser at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, moving into a role at the centre of Uganda’s foreign policy and diplomatic affairs.
Mujuni’s appointment marks a significant shift in his career, having spent years working in journalism, current affairs and public-interest reporting. His new position will see him apply his experience in research, analysis and communication to matters concerning Uganda’s engagement with the international community.
Throughout his career, Mujuni has been associated with investigative journalism and senior editorial and current-affairs roles, covering issues including governance, accountability, politics and developments affecting Uganda and the wider East African region.
His experience in examining complex issues, interpreting political developments and communicating them to the public is expected to add value to his new responsibilities at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, where policy analysis and strategic communication are important components of diplomatic work.
The appointment comes as Uganda continues to strengthen its participation in regional and international platforms, including the African Union, East African Community, BRICS and the Non-Aligned Movement, while maintaining diplomatic relations with countries and institutions across the world.
In his new capacity, Mujuni is expected to provide policy advice and analysis on issues falling within the ministry’s mandate. His background in journalism is also likely to be useful in understanding public affairs, international developments and the communication of government policy.
His move from journalism into government is part of a broader trend in which experienced media professionals bring their skills in research, public communication and analysis into public policy and administration. Such experience can play an important role in helping institutions interpret developments and communicate effectively with different audiences.
For Mujuni, the appointment represents a new chapter after years in the media industry. From reporting and analysing events in the newsroom to contributing to policy discussions within Uganda’s diplomatic establishment, his transition places his experience on a new platform with responsibilities extending beyond journalism.
