A fresh tragedy has once again struck the Kampala–Masaka Highway after a horrific road crash in Lwera Swamp, Kalungu District, claimed the lives of 14 people and left several others nursing serious injuries. The latest accident has shocked many Ugandans and renewed concerns over the growing number of fatal crashes being recorded on one of the country’s busiest highways.
The deadly crash occurred on the night of Monday, August 3, 2026, at around 11:00pm near Kamunga Trading Centre in Lwera Swamp. According to police, the collision involved a Toyota Hiace taxi registration number UA 662AQ and a Sino truck registration number UBS 040F that was transporting sand.
Preliminary police findings indicate that the impact of the collision was extremely severe, leaving the taxi badly damaged. Emergency responders and police officers rushed to the scene, only to find that many of the passengers had already lost their lives before any rescue efforts could save them.
Police have confirmed that all the 14 people who died were travelling in the taxi. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene after suffering severe injuries caused by the violent collision. Their bodies were later retrieved and taken for postmortem examinations as authorities worked to identify all the deceased.
The heartbreaking accident has left families and relatives in mourning as they wait for official communication regarding their loved ones. Many people who heard about the crash gathered at the scene, with witnesses describing the aftermath as one of the most disturbing road accidents witnessed in recent months.
Despite the heavy loss of life, four people survived the crash with injuries. Two of the injured were passengers travelling in the taxi, while the other two were occupants of the Sino truck. They were quickly rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

Medical teams at the hospital are reportedly doing everything possible to stabilize the injured victims. Police have not yet released details about the condition of the survivors but say they remain under medical care.
Police officers immediately secured the accident scene and began documenting evidence to help determine what exactly caused the deadly collision. Investigators examined the damaged vehicles, skid marks and other physical evidence that could explain how the crash happened.
Authorities have also launched a search for the driver of the Sino truck, who reportedly fled the scene shortly after the accident. Police say tracing the driver is now one of the key priorities in the ongoing investigations, as his account could provide crucial information about the circumstances leading to the crash.
Investigators are expected to question witnesses, survivors and other road users who may have seen the accident happen. Their statements will be combined with forensic findings to establish responsibility for the fatal collision.
The Kampala–Masaka Highway remains one of Uganda’s busiest transport corridors, connecting Kampala to several districts in the central and southwestern parts of the country. Every day, thousands of vehicles, including taxis, buses, trucks and private cars, use the road to transport passengers and goods.
However, the Lwera Swamp section has over the years gained a reputation as one of the most dangerous stretches of the highway. Numerous fatal crashes have been recorded there, particularly during the night when visibility becomes poor and some motorists exceed speed limits.
Road safety experts have repeatedly warned that speeding, dangerous overtaking, driver fatigue and failure to observe traffic regulations continue to contribute to the high number of accidents along the highway. Heavy trucks carrying construction materials also present additional risks if not driven carefully.
The latest tragedy has once again sparked public debate about the need for stronger enforcement of traffic laws and stricter action against reckless drivers. Many Ugandans have called for increased police patrols, speed monitoring and improved road safety awareness campaigns to reduce accidents.

Police have urged all motorists to exercise maximum caution whenever using the Kampala–Masaka Highway, especially during night travel. Drivers have been reminded to keep safe following distances, avoid speeding and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before beginning any journey.
Passengers have also been encouraged to speak out whenever they notice dangerous driving. Police say reporting reckless behaviour before tragedy strikes can help save lives and prevent avoidable road crashes.
As investigations continue, police are expected to release additional information, including the identities of all the deceased and the findings from the ongoing inquiry. Authorities believe the investigation will help establish whether negligence or other factors contributed to the collision.
The latest accident serves as another painful reminder of the devastating impact road crashes continue to have on Ugandan families. In just a matter of seconds, lives were lost, families were shattered and survivors were left with injuries that may take months or even years to heal.
Police have appealed to anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the truck driver or any details that may assist investigators to report to the nearest police station. Such information, they say, could be vital in ensuring accountability and delivering justice for the victims.
As the country mourns yet another road tragedy, many hope the painful lessons from the Lwera Swamp crash will encourage greater responsibility among all road users. Authorities continue to emphasize that every driver has a duty to protect lives by following traffic regulations, remaining alert behind the wheel and making safety the first priority on every journey.
